PROJECTS

FEEDBACK
HEREWEAR Hub
9 months after the project has ended, we'd like to know if users of the HEREWEAR HUB are finding it useful. The HUB is a suite of 36 online resources designed to translate the diverse technical project outputs so that the knowledge is more accessible to a wide and diverse audience.

INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS
FABRIX
Cedecs-TCBL and some other partners of FABRIX will be present with a poster to share some of the first project results at the Ecosystex Conference in Göteborg (Sweden). As you know, the FABRIX project aims to rebuild urban industry and circular ecosystems.
If you are in one of the pilot cities – Rotterdam and Athens – make note of the Open Call for T&C manufacturers (SMEs, artisans, designers etc.) open through September and October! Learn about the project and calls at www.fabrixproject.eu

TRANSITION
BIOBASED MATERIALS
Research is accelerating in exploring the potential of bacteria in the Textile and Clothing sector. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue green algae, can produce bio acetate, which offers a renewable alternative to fossil fuel based acetate used in products such as eyeglass frames. They can also generate phycocyanin, a natural blue pigment that can replace synthetic dyes. Bacteria that produce cellulose, like those found in kombucha cultures, can be harvested and processed into fabric or leather like materials. Similarly, mycelium from fungi is being developed as a sustainable substitute for conventional leather. If you are interested in discovering other biobased materials that we have used and designed with, visit the HEREWEAR Hub

INSPIRATIONS (or not)
Studio Lausié Marseille, France
Founded in 2021, this studio teaches how to design with pre- and post- consumer garments, end of rolls or any kind of waste. Founder Manon also created the first Slow Fashion Week this year in Marseille. She is very much representative of how younger designers want to tackle sustainability at a systemic and local level. Knitting is fascinating and inspiring
Researchers from Drexel and Pennsylvania Universities (Pennsylvania, US) or from Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris and Lyon, France) explore why and how rigid yarns become elastic when knitted in flat or 3D pieces. Answers lie in the types of meshes and the number of knots, which makes the complex structure of the knit. Researchers still explore how to modelize the anticipated properties of a knitted fabric in a digital twin, which is more difficult than expected with so many contact points and frictions. Beyond fashion, such models could inspire solutions in other contexts e.g. for medical prothesis, for the anticipated behaviour of an earthquake etc. Read the article (in French)
Iris Van Herpen continues exploring the fragile connection between craftmanship, humanity and digital technologies in her most recent haute couture collection, Sympoiesis. Pictures from the official website
Innovation in sneakers by Stella McCartney
Partnering with the biopolymer startup Balena, they engineered a BioCirFlex® material, designed to have the same comfort and resilience as conventional TPU, but easily recycled into a new sole. As a further service, the shoe’s upper, made from hemp and pineapple waste in the white version, can be replaced when worn out. Info from the official website
36th ESMOD International Fashion Show, 30 June 2025, Tunis and Sousse
The show demonstrated how a new generation of engaged designers is weaving craftmanship and innovation, and how they connect fashion with durability and creativity, echoing the work that was done in the Wintex and TexRev projects. Read the article (in French)
